MFA in Writing
Lecture: "Stay Tuned You May Say Something Brilliant at Any Moment."
I presented this lecture to the students and faculty of the Vermont College MFA in Writing Program as part of the requirements for graduation. This lecture examined how some contemporary poetry enters into meaning via abstraction, which is to say through the interplay of the imagination and the reality-based world. This discussion of poems that effectively wed reality to the functioning of the imagination is balanced by examples that point to the breakdown of meaning that occurs when the concrete world does not live in the abstract, and by the same token where the abstract nature of experience does not live in the concrete world.
Critical Thesis: "Reading the Waters: Evolution, Influence, and Rebellion."
This sixty page critical paper consists of an interview with poet Harry Humes between a critical preface and an exegesis of poems by Humes, James Dickey, and myself. The paper is an insightful look at influence and rebellion in the relationships between poets and their mentors.
Creative Thesis:Background Noise.
This manuscript contains twenty-eight poems that were completed during my tenure in the Master of Fine Arts Program from July 1993 through July 1995. The organization of the poems in this manuscript supports a loosely implied narrative that contemplates coming of age on the fringe of a lost generation. The poems arc from explorations of youthful folly to adulthood before plunging into issues of relationship and self-identity.
